How Linux chmod Permissions Work
In Unix and Linux operating systems, every file and directory has three permission classes: Owner (User), Group, and Others (Public). Each class has three access bits:
- Read (r = 4): Permission to view file contents or list directory files.
- Write (w = 2): Permission to modify, save, or delete file contents.
- Execute (x = 1): Permission to run the file as a program or navigate into a directory.
The numbers are additive: Read (4) + Write (2) + Execute (1) = 7. Read (4) + Write (2) = 6. Read (4) + Execute (1) = 5.
